Flying with Luxair, not a good experience – 1/5 stars

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

So, I’ve had the “great pleasure” of kicking my well deserved holidays off with a bad case of the flu, maybe even the famous one. Ever since friday night/saturday morning, I’ve been very feverish, dizzy, coughing and feeling as “wimpy” as men do that catch a virus. As you can imagine, and as my holidays were well deserved, I had had other plans: London!

Going back just a slight step, some may remember my episode with Luxair in 2007? Where I was not allowed to “lateboard” (or JIT-board if you like :) ) a plane in London City Airport as I looked like a student? If you don’t, here’s the brief summary:

was travelling the UK for a few days to meet the EF School staff on site as this was helpful for sales in the Luxembourg office. Extremely exhausting as it was, I arrived at London City Airport late, 30 minutes before departure, but I had one bag filled with all the stuff that needed to be scanned, and in the other hand my papers (no checkin luggage), so in theory, I could have been at the gate in 8 minutes (I’ve managed that in the past). The guy informed me it was too late, and when I pointed my preparedness out to him, he agreed to call the gate. Whilst in call, he looked at me, replied to the other person: “no, a student”, hung up and informed me that it was indeed too late, and I needed to buy another ticket. It took me a few minutes on my way to ticketing to realize what had happened, and so for the longest time, all new EF students would fly with VLM instead of Luxair – I couldn’t risk them being refused boarding just because they looked like a student!

Marketing presentation at a local cinema, 3/5 stars

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

The other night, I had been invited to a short notice presentation of a rather new cinema as a channel for our marketing messages. As this coincided with a larger project I am working on, I registered my colleague and myself for the presentation and was already considering ways that would be useful to our purposes.

The next day, I received an email confirming the presentation had to be rescheduled to a later date as the chosen date coincided with the Marketing of the Year awards…hm. Nonetheless, we would be able to come and see the place, watch a movie, and ask questions. As the presentation was rescheduled to January (!), we decided to go anyway.

Wallstreet Journal has great customer care – 5/5 stars

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

As some of you might remember, I have in the past already praised the customer service team of the Wallstreet Journal, but they continue to positively surprise me! Since my change of address, the delivery didn’t reach me twice (this would be a negative point, I know :) ). I called their helpline where a polite young woman apologized for the mishap, they kindly confirmed details and asked me whether or not I wished to receive the newspapers I had missed, or whether I wanted my subscription to be extended. Both times, I received my missing papers the same day, within a couple of hours I would say, and they extended my subscription anyway.

Great customer service you would say?

Beefbar Luxembourg, wasabi ice-cream? – 2/5 stars

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

As you may have noticed by now, I do enjoy going to the restaurant – a lot! This is not so much because I don’t like cooking (I do!), but more to relax and enjoy a fine moment in good company. This is of course not all too well for my financial situation and for my fitness, but it allows me to have quite a bit of experience that allows me to quickly grasp whether or not an establishment suits my expectations (or not), and just simplifies and optimizes my day-to-day life :) .

With hardly any noticeable marketing running, a few restaurants opened up – in the dark of the night – in our local french supermarket (AUCHAN) in Kirchberg, and only slowly did a certain awareness grow about the place within my usual circle of fellow eaters. So a short while back, 2 buddies of mine joined me for a first test run of the gallery (shopping-mall style, “all hail the US”), and this is how I remember that night.

Whilst having drinks in the mid-section we discussed which restaurant we should choose, and after discovering that the local Mojito’s cost 12€ a piece (!), we thought it could only get better, and launched towards that Beefbar, “exclusively only available in Monaco, Nice, Moscow and now Luxembourg”.

Passage Fitness / Fitness First – 2/5 stars

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

My experience with Gyms has been what is commonly known as a love/hate relationship! I remember signing up to Fitness First, just as with Ross and Chandler with a gorgeous young lady, only in Tottenham High Road, and then not go to the gym for nearly a year. I then decided to start going, “for real”, and actually did manage to consequently go for 4-5 times, a week, and only for my masters, I decided to focus entirely on my studies, and henceforth, cancelled my UK subscription.

When I returned to Luxembourg, after my dad fell ill, I decided to go back to the spirit of health and a better body, and subscribed to Passage Fitness, their Luxembourg pendant! And boy, did I go to the gym :) – 5 times a week, every morning before going to work, and I did manage to return to nearly perfect weight and good shape (although round is a good shape too), but then ruptured a bone whilst snowboarding, and fell out of the habit. I did return occasionally until I started having my serious backproblems, and have not really been to the gym in nearly a year. After consultation with my doc and physiotherapist, I will start again now!

Why this rambling though you might ask? Well, let me tell you about my breakup with Passage Fitness then, as well as I recollect and from my point of view!

Permission marketing & Facebook

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

As many of you out there, I have also given in to the magic of Facebook, where you can meet old friends and make new ones, all the while filling your mind with sometimes useless bits of information that allow you to better grasp the thoughts, issues and ideas of people you don’t see every day. All the while this is free, it is one of those projects that in my opinion needs to build trust so that people using it feel ok to really share bits of their lives…

At the same time, the marketer within tempts me with questions on how certain gaps may be filled, on a tool as user-friendly and sharing as Facebook?
